Global organizations must make upskilling a priority


According to a DevOps Institute study, 52% of global respondents reported that their organization has a formal program for upskilling, while only 32% said they did so in 2021.

A new report finds that upskilling is an essential organizational requirement to address the global shortage of IT talent.

However, there is progress. According to the global report 2022 from the DevOps Institute Upskilling IT, 52 percent of global respondents stated that their organization has formal training programs. Only 32% of respondents indicated they had one during the institute’s 2021 research.

PwC and Salesforce were cited as examples of companies that have created successful upskilling programs.

According to the report, PwC created the Digital Fitness app2 that provides training tools for a variety of topics, including artificial intelligence, machine-learning, and augmented reality. The app is available for both employees and the general public.

Salesforce’s Trailhead3 digital training program, which allows users to acquire in-demand skills and earn certifications, is the best. The report stated that participants choose a career path, such as data analyst or developer, and then follow the “trail” to achieve that career.

Organizational challenges remain large due to a lack of talent.

Many organizations are updating their legacy systems and need to add new capabilities. However, technical debt is making it difficult for them to do this. According to 40% of respondents, IT organizations face insufficient resources and a skill gap. This trend is likely to continue for many years.

The global talent shortage could reach 85 million by 2030. The report stated that if the problem is not addressed, it could lead to $8.5 trillion in annual unrealized revenues in 2030.

Additionally, only 29% tech companies have the right IT talent. According to the DevOps Institute report, there will be a shortage of software developers worldwide by 2026.

The most severe skills gaps are in cognitive (47%), technical (47%), as well as process and framework skills (45%).

The terms process and framework refer to a range of processes and frameworks that are used within IT organizations. Human skills include emotional intelligence and psychological safety as well as dynamic learning, transformational leadership, and psychological safety.

Many technical skills are essential, including containers, microservices and elastic infrastructure. Ninety-two per cent of respondents rated security and cybersecurity critical or very important.

This skill includes the ability to use software engineering and support automation to understand process flow, and to reengineer tasks, processes, and procedures with the goal of replacing manual tasks and events with automation.

Leadership skills include leadership, coaching, guiding, and decision making

The report noted that there has been a drastic shift in skill capabilities between pre- and post-pandemic priorities. While there are caveats to how the results were interpreted, we believe that organizations are becoming less demanding when it comes to hiring for essential skills because of the lack of skilled workers in the post-pandemic era.
